Inactives for Tonight’s Game:
Kings: Shareef Abdur-Rahim, Kenny Thomas
Lakers: Chris Mihm, Andrew Bynum
10:41 Outstanding pass from Gasol to a cutting Radmanovic ties the game at four with about a minute and a half gone by. Both the Lakers and Kings look sharp to open up the game with L.A. making three of four and the Kings nailing two of their first three field goal attempts.
8:19 Gasol gets it done himself this time, draining a 16 footer that hits nothing but net to tie the score at 10. Ron Artest has come out of the gates strong for the Kings, making his first two field goals, including a thunderous dunk two possessions ago. Early on, it also looks like the two rivals have picked up right where they left off five days ago in a game Coach Jackson labeled “chippy” before tonight’s rematch.
6:28 Luke Walton replaces Vladimir Radmanovic in the Lakers’ lineup.
5:43 With just under half of the first quarter remaining, the Lakers are holding on to an early 14-13 lead, but have yet to put their footprint on this game, despite looking sharp in the opening minutes. On their last possession before the Lakers called a timeout, Kobe lost control of the ball and dribbled it out of bounds for the team’s second turnover.
5:19 Obviously peeved at himself for the previous play, Kobe takes the ball almost the full length of the court and lobs a soft jumper from underneath the basket and also draws the foul. Kobe’s aggression has resulted in eight early points.
4:57 Farmar comes into the game for Fisher.
2:57 The Lakers have suddenly gotten sloppy, turning the ball over on four consecutive possessions as the Kings have opened up a 25-19 lead with three and a half to go in the first. Sacramento just called a timeout, so hopefully the Lakers can regroup and come out with greater focus to close out the quarter. Right now, the Kings are simply outhustling the them as evidenced by their decisive six rebound edge at 11-5.
1:29 After turning the ball over yet again, the Lakers recover nicely with a Gasol to Farmar pass that leads to an uncontested layup to tie the score at 25.
1:17 Sasha Vujacic enters the game for Jordan.
10:18 All the pestering that Sasha has been doing pays off as Quincy Douby can’t get the ball over the half court line in the alloted eight seconds.
6:25 The Kings push their lead to eight after two Kevin Martin free throws. Sacramento has capitalized on the 10 Lakers turnovers, converting them into 15-points. 51-43 Kings.
5:23 Pau gets tagged for a phantom trip on Udrih. The fact that Gasol never touched him and Beno just went down because of his own clumsiness is irrelevant.
2:48 The Lakers head into the timeout down elven points at 60-49. The defense that has been a question mark during the season is pretty poor right now.
1:22 Gasol is showing some fury down low after getting knocked around the past couple of possessions. The refs haven’t been very consistent on what they’re going to call and what they’re not going to call tonight.
0:00 A late trey by Sasha cut the Kings lead to single digits for a moment until Udrih put it back to 11-points with a deuce. I don’t know the last time they allowed 70-points in a half, but it isn’t all that fun to watch happen.
10:56 One play after turning the ball over, Radmanovic redeems himself by nailing a wide open three pointer that put the Lakers back within 11 of the Kings at 64-75. Vladi just nailed his second three one minute later after a bucket by Ron Artest
8:37 Odom hits a bay hook that brings the Lakers to within 10 of the resilient King at 69-79. Lamar has eight points and five rebounds on the night. However, like the Lakers, Odom has failed to sustain any momentum for more than a few plays at a time, resulting in a Sacramento team that is bursting with confidence.
6:20 Coach Jackson just called a timeout with half the quarter remaining and the Lakers looking lifeless. Kobe brought L.A. to within seven of the Kings moments ago, but a jumper from the top of the key by Artest and a layup by Udrih has the King’s lead back to 11. Apparently the Lakers didn’t learn their lesson against the Kings at ARCO Arena last week as once again, the scrappy Kings are completely outplaying the Lakers in almost every statistical category.
4:32 a monster dunk by Gasol on the fast-break finally gives the fans at STAPLES Center something to cheer about as they rise to their feet during the timeout with the King’s lead reduced to five points. Even better news for the Lakers: two plays ago, Ron Artest and his 17 points headed to the bench as he picked up his fourth personal foul.
2:53 The Lakers are surging after Fisher nailed a jumper from the corner to cut the Kings lead to one after a flurry of Lakers’ misses on their previous trip down the floor.
2:13 Double technicals were just assessed to Gasol and Miller.
1:54 Things are really getting testy for both teams as Kobe just earned himself a T after arguing a missed foul call on the Lakers’ end.
12:00 Turiaf and Vujacic are on the floor to open the fourth quarter for L.A., joining Farmar, Gasol and Bryant.
9:48 Gasol is headed to the line for two after a little Kings flurry–including consecutive layups–has pushed their lead back to seven points at 98-93. After a slow first half, Pau has been much more aggressive in the past six minutes or so, upping his scoring total on the game to 19.
7:56 Turiaf makes a great pass in traffic to a cutting Odom to bring the Lakers back within five of the Kings at 100-95. Phil is really trusting his reserves to buy some time for the starters and get the team back into the game, putting a lineup of Radmanovic, Farmar, Turiaf, Vujacic and Odom on the floor.
6:42 A Huge three pointer by Sasha has Mr. Momentum back on the Lakers side, for one play anyway. The Lakers still trail by two though, 100-98, but are finally picking it up on defensive end.
6:10 After resting for a few minutes, Bryant and Fisher are back on the floor coming out of the timeout.
4:19 The Lakers get another big three, this time from DFish that brings the Lakers back to within one of the Kings. But, on the King’s side of they court, Mike Moore just broke through the Lakers’ defense for an uncontested dunk to push it back to three.
2:40 Mikey Moore was just given a technical foul for a dead-ball elbow, meanwhile Sasha was just assessed a loose ball foul after missing a wide-open layup. Sasha made the technical shot to bring the Lakers to within one of the Kings at 107-108.
1:01 Lamar hits a running jumper to bring the Lakers to within one of the Kings with a minute to go.
15.1 Gasol lays the ball in off glass off of a great pass by Fisher to give the Lakers a one-point lead–their first since the 4:33 mark in the first quarter.
4.6 Udrih drives to the basket and gets fouled, sending him to the line for two. He made both and the Kings are up by a point with five seconds to go and the Lakers with the ball.
0:00 Kobe misses a game-winning fadeaway at the buzzer and the Kings escape STAPLES Center with the victory.
FINAL SCORE: Kings 114, Lakers 113
