Inactives for Tonight’s Game:
Mavericks: Jamaal Magloire, Jerry Stackhouse, Jose Barea
Lakers: Trevor Ariza, Andrew Bynum, Coby Karl
11:21 Kobe matches Nowitzki’s opening three by nailing one of his own to open up the scoring for the Lakers with almost a minute gone by in the opening quarter. The last time Dirk was at STAPLES Center, he burned the Lakers with one of his best games of the season so the L.A. can’t be too excited that he’s already opened up the game strong. Unfortunately, for the Mavs, it looks like Kobe’s come to play as well, hitting another three on the Lakers’ next possession.
8:40 Unlike his game against the Blazers two nights ago, Gasol has come out of the gates aggressive on offense, nearly making a hook shot on the Lakers’ previous possession before drilling an outside jumper for his first points of the game. The Lakers trail the Mavs 10-13 early on though.
5:52 Pau continues his strong start, once again going up with confidence and making a 16 footer that hits nothing but net. With the make, Gasol ties Kobe for the Lakers scoring lead with six points. The Lakers are shooting well to open up the game, but Dallas still leads L.A. by three points at 21-18.
4:50 Odom tips the ball to himself at least three times off the miss, finally gaining control of the ball before knocking it in to bring the Lakers to within one point of Dallas. Lamar has four points on the night.
4:33 Sasha enters the game, replacing Radmanovic.
2:39 Everyone’s out of their seats after a great pass from Odom to Gasol leads to a dunk from Pau. Gasol becomes the first player on either team to reach double figures tonight, notching his tenth point to lead the Lakers.
2:31 Turiaf and Farmar check into the game after the timeout.
06.2 Walton enters the game for the first time, looking to build on consecutive solid performances. The game is tied at 31.
11:42 Gasol’s affecting the game in a variety of ways so far besides his 10 points. Point and case: he just delivered a perfect pass to a cutting Farmar who makes a nifty reverse layup for his first bucket of the night. Pau has thee rebounds to go with his four assists.
8:18 Timeout on the court as Mavs have begun to clamp down on defense in the first four minutes of the quarter while dominating in the rebounding department. Led by Terry and Howard’s nine points a piece, Dallas has bumped its lead to a game-high seven points at 40-33.
8:18 Odom and Terry return for the Lakers and Mavs.
8:09 Gasol just picked up a flagrant foul after his extra rough foul on Dampier. Luckily, the Mav’s center missed both of the ensuing free throws.
6:20 Fisher and Bryant both return for the Lakers with the team in desperate need of a spark with the Mavs leading 47-33.
5:37 The Lakers finally get a field goal after Gasol passes to Vladi for a layup underneath the basket. L.A.’s been unable to stop Dallas on their end though as the Mavs continue to lead the Lakers by 14.
3:52 The Lakers show exceptional patience on offense, with Kobe methodically passing to Vladi before Fisher dumped it into Lamar for a layup and the second foul on Nowtizki. The Lakers are still down 55-44 though.
1:52 After Vladi missed a three on the Lakers’ previous possession, Fisher connects on one from deep to cut the Mavs’ lead to 11 at 50-61. Despite the make, Derek has been a non-factor on offense so far, only scoring four points.
HALFTIME: Mavericks 64, Lakers 54
The Mavericks outplayed the Lakers in almost every statistical category in the first half, particular on the boards as they have a 22-17 edge at halftime. Dallas’ big four had an outstanding first half, with each reaching double digits in scoring, led by Howard and Terry’s 13 points each. Lamar Odom had a stellar first half of his own, scoring 17 points. Pau Gasol also had a great first half for the Lakers with 14 points and five assists.
11:33 Phil isn’t happy after the Lakers gave up an easy jumper to Terry, immediately calling a timeout even though we’re only 27 seconds into the second half.
10:42 Gasol picks up right where he left off in the first half, making an easy jumper from about 12 feet out for his sixteenth point of the night. On the previous possession, Odom made a layup underneath the basket for his team-high nineteenth point of the night.
8:44 The Lakers finally put together back-to-back stops and it’s beginning to pay off on the scoreboard as the team has pulled to within six of the Mavs at 62-68 after a great pass from Gasol leads to an uncontested dunk by Odom for his 21st point of the night.
5:53 Fisher steals the ball from Terry and sends the Lakers on a dramatic fast break that leads to a wide-open dunk by Gasol after a great pass from Kobe. Too bad the Lakers just wasted any momentum gained by the basket after consecutive turnovers resulted in uncontested baskets for the Mavs to push their lead back to 11 at 80-69.
4:42 Vujacic returns to the floor after the timeout.
3:40 Gasol makes his second basket in a row, this time backing Dirk down before lobbing a soft baby hook that brings the Lakers to within single digits of Dallas again at 73-82. With the make, Pau also took over the team’s lead in scoring with his 22nd of the night.
2:46 Farmar replaces Fisher after Kobe’s triple cuts the lead to six.
1:33 Turiaf is into the lineup, replacing Pau.
12:00 Newble is into the lineup to open the fourth quarter for the Lakers.
10:15 Sasha shows no hesitation in launching a quick three to bring the Lakers to within five of Dallas at 86-91 after Dallas had made consecutive dunks. Vujacic has seven points on the night off the bench for L.A.
9:33 Walton comes into the game for the Lakers in place of Newble.
7:40 Standing ovation from the STAPLES Center crowd after Odom backs down the Mav’s front line for his team-leading 25th point of the night that brings the Lakers to within a point of overtaking the lead, 93-94. The current unit on the floor–Odom, Walton, Farmar, Vujacic and Turiaf–has excelled on both ends of the floor to open the fourth quarter, providing with Kobe a lengthy rest.
7:40 Kobe finally reenters the game.
6:24 After clanking his previous shot, Walton is replaced with Gasol.
4:44 Farmar electrifies the crowd, driving deep into the lane and throwing his body toward the basket, making the awkward layup and one to bring the Lakers to within only one point of the Mavs at 97-98. Farmar has nine points on the night.
3:45 Kobe drives into the lane is rewarded with two free throws that tie the score at 101 with under four minutes remaining.
