With the No. 1 overall pick in the 1978 NBA Draft, the Portland Trail Blazers selected University of Minnesota product Mychal Thompson, a native of Nassau, Bahamas.
Through seven seasons, Thompson averaged 16.7 points, 8.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.4 blocks and just under one steal per game. Thompson then spent half of the next year with the San Antonio Spurs before being traded to the L.A. Lakers, where he’d spend the final four and a half years of his career while averaging roughly 10 points and six boards a game.
Two points here:
A) Thompson was pretty good, remember?
B)* MT’s uniquely qualified to analyze this matchup.
We sat down with Thompson in the Lakers’ Portland hotel to discuss the 7 p.m. contest.
